At today’s press event focused on AI, Microsoft unveiled Microsoft 365 Copilot, its newest effort to infuse its suite of business and productivity applications with AI. After being tested with select commercial customers, Copilot combines the power of AI models similar to OpenAI’s GPT-4 with Microsoft 365 apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
“We are revolutionizing how people interact with computing and this will drastically change the way we work, unlocking a new wave of productivity,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. “Microsoft 365 Copilot allows us to provide people with more control over technology through the use of natural language.”
The capabilities of Copilot vary depending on which app it is used in. For instance, in Word, Copilot can write, edit, summarize, and generate text. In PowerPoint and Excel, Copilot can provide natural language commands to create presentations and data visualizations. In Outlook, Copilot manages inboxes and synthesizes emails. In Teams, Copilot can generate real-time summaries and action items in conversation threads.
The most interesting feature of Copilot is Business Chat, which integrates data from emails, presentations, documents, notes, calendar, and contacts to write emails, update product strategies, summarize chats, and find key dates.
Pricing and licensing details are yet to be shared. Microsoft has made clear that the AI models used by Copilot are not trained on customer content or on individual prompts.
Microsoft’s investment strategy in AI and automation is no secret, with the company having recently pumped billions into OpenAI. However, this has had its own set of issues, such as a shortage of server hardware needed to handle AI-powered applications, like the new GPT-4 chatbot used by Bing and the upcoming Microsoft 365 Copilot.
